New Music Workshop gives upper-level students at the University of Windsor School of Music an opportunity to explore different aspects of new music (composition, performance, improvisation, analysis and interdisciplinary work) within a community of collaborators. Founded in 2006, the NMW has given more than twenty performances of student compositions, contemporary masterworks, and improvisations. Central to the New Music Workshop are the commitments to musical diversity, experimentation, and collaboration. Recent events included a program of the music of Frederic Rzewski, a program of improvisational works directed by artist-in-residence Rodney Sharman, a performance of improvisations under the supervision of Bill Cahn of the Nexus Percussion ensemble, and several concerts of student compositions. Participation in the New Music Workshop is open to students who have completed Music Theory IV (32-213) or by permission of the instructor. Coming events for 2010-11 include recitals of student compositions on February 10 and April 28, with more to be announced in the coming months.
